:: DESTINATION :: LA & San Diego Road Trip ::
Since I can remember one of my favorite hobbies is taking road trips. Cruising down the freeway for hours at a time is almost meditative for me. I've been taking frequent road trips from Santa Cruz to LA & San Diego since I was 19. I love to explore new places and travelling around California can be pretty inexpensive if you stay with carpool, stay with friends, and pack your own food instead of going out to eat.
My lumbar spine and hamstring has been injured since November of 2014. I've been feeling a lot better since I started taking CBD oil frequently so I figured I might as well take a trip to the birthplace of skating, Santa Monica, California. I haven't skated in months so I was thrilled to finally be back on my board. Not many people know, but I have been downhill skating for 8 years. I left my friend's house in Oakland, CA Friday night and took a Craigslist rideshare down to Los Angeles. I got into town super late, so I woke up early on Saturday morning and spent the day reconnecting with old friends and skating along the ocean boardwalk. I had a friend's party to attend that night in San Diego and before I knew it, the time had come to catch the train down south.
A huge reason for my road trip was to help my mom pack for her move from San Diego to Seattle. She picked me up at the train station and we headed straight to Wonderland, a bar in Ocean Beach, where my friend Heidi was celebrating her birthday party. Heidi is my friend's mom and I was happy she was able to meet my own mom. Heidi works with the California Innocence Project, a law school clinic that exonerates wrongfully incarcerated individuals. She had many amazing people attending her party and I was honored she invited me. After the party my mom dropped me off at one of my best friend's house where we prepared for Ego Trip's Leather & Lace Burning Man fundraiser party.
The party was insane. There were 3 different floors of music, entertainment, and shopping. The music was incredible and everyone was dressed in their best leather and lace. My friend Ashley and I spent the entire night dancing our booties off. The party didn't end until 4am, but we tapped out around 3. We stopped at a Mexican joint for some munchies before we headed back to her house for some much needed girl time and rest.
After a crazy night of boogieing and sipping on Patron, we were like turtles waking up in the morning. Our bodies were sore from furiously dancing and maybe we were a little hungover. ;) Once we finally pulled ourselves together, we grabbed coffee in Point Loma. Ashley was headed to study for Acupuncture school at the beach and I was cruising to the Double Tree hotel in Little Italy. My big sister, Natalia, is a flight attendant and happened to have a long layover in San Diego the same time I was visiting. Ashley dropped me off at the hotel and I was stoked. The place was so nice! I met my sister in the lobby and we headed up to her room on the 12th story.
My mom met up with us and she brought us a fantastic picnic she made. We macked on some fresh caught halibut, salsa, raspberry salad, cantaloupe, and orange juice by the pool. I am very close with my family. (I have four siblings!) It feels amazing when we can get together and catch up.
Once we finished eating, we headed back to the hotel where we took more photos and watched the sunset. My sister had to work a flight to San Francisco at 7pm so we all hung out in the room while she got ready. I wish I had a taken a picture of her in the flight attendant uniform. I am so proud of her!
My sister hopped on a shuttle to make it to her flight. I was stoked that she would be catching the first flight back to San Diego. Natalia was joining the road trip back up to Santa Cruz. My mom was moving some of her belongings back to Seattle, so we all decided that Santa Cruz would be a great halfway point for the two of them. I was so excited to spend some time with my family in the place that I call home. My mom picked my sister up from the airport later that night and we all headed back to my uncle's house in Bonita. Monday morning we packed the car full of belongings and headed to Santa Cruz. Of course we got of to a late start though! We didn't leave San Diego until around 7pm. We had a lot of family members to see and we didn't want to leave them. I had work at 10am on Tuesday morning and I was worried I wouldn't get enough sleep! Thankfully I took a solid power nap in the car!
All is well that ends well and I made it to work in time Tuesday morning feeling completely rested and rejuvinated. My mom and Natalia spent some time with me in Santa Cruz and I still can't believe what an epic road trip it turned out to be. I am so lucky that my family is adventurous. I am also extremely blessed that my mom and my sister are my best friends. Happy Wanderlust Wednesday! I hope this inspires you to take a road trip of your own sometime soon. xx Rachael Arias
